100 Common List of Prepositions with Examples in English Learn Basic Preposition lost that are generally used in daily life. Prepositions are basically used to join one object to another. They help create connections among various things. We can also describe different types of locations by using them. They play an important role in English speaking and more importantly, they are used in writing. i have explained the most common 100 preposition list below with easy examples.

100 Preposition list with Examples

  • Above
    (Higher than anything

    Examples:
    Everyday, birds fly above the sky.

    The water came above our feet.

 

  • After    
    (describes timing) 

           Examples:
            she went to the office after taking a meal.
            He reads a story every day after the lecture.
 

  • Along    
    (giving direction/ next to)

Examples:
You must come along with your parents for the official meeting.
He walks along the sea every day the morning.

 

  • Across 
    (to describe the position)

Examples:

      The strayed dogs lay across my the lane.
      The women walks across the road.

 

  • Against     
    (Describing position or direction)

Examples:
The laptop was lying against the wall.
The boy hurled the dog against the fence.

 

  • Around    
    (describing the position)

Examples:
My father walks around the village each morning.
The planets move around the sun in the sky.

 

  • On    
    (to describe the high position or surface of something)

Examples:
The book is placed on the table.
All the girls have been playing games on the floor.

 

  • In    
    (to describe a closed place of anything)

Examples:

    (describing a correct position or timing)

    (used to say something or someone is next to anything…)

  • Before
    (used to refer to an earlier than the required time) 

              Examples:
             He called his best friend before 7 AM  in the morning.

              The doctor recommended the patient to wash his hands regularly before taking food. 

 

  • Behind
    (used to describe that something is in the backside) 

             Examples: 
            The man has been trying his best to save himself behind the wall.
            Ali has been directed to stay behind to take care of the patients.

 

  • Below
    (describing the lower position of anything) 

             Examples:
             Kindly, do not read below these lines.
            Thieves made up their mind to hide in the basement below the flour.

 

  • Beneath
    (a lower position of something) 

                 Examples:  
                  All employees went to sleep beneath the tree after taking the meal.   
                  His pet cat was sitting beneath the table.

 

  • Beside
    (next to or on the side of anything) 

                Examples:
                The teacher finally decided to stand beside his student.
               A boy was compelled to stand beside the burning fire.

 

  • Down
    (describing the movement towards a lower place or position) 

              Examples:
               John went down the stairs to see the dog barking outside.
               The old man has been walking down the small street.

  • By
    (how something is done)

    Examples:

    The government ordered demolish the house by a heavy fire.
    The whole damage happened by a massive storm.

 

  • According to
    (doing some action as per plan)

               Examples:
                the match should be played according to the rules.
                Acceding to him, I should not involve myself in political affairs.

 

  • Into     
    (used to describe the movement towards something) 

                 Examples:
                   Avoid mix the hot water into the bottle.
                  The teacher got angry and threw the extra amount into the fire.

 

  • Inside
    (used to tell the inner side of something) 

                Examples:
               Ali was really anxious to know what was actually inside the bag.
                There was a gigantic snake inside the package.

 

  • For
    (indicating towards the use of something) 

               Examples:
             I have purchased these pencils for my friends.
            The mother sold an expensive car for arranging food for her children.

 

  • To
    (Movement from one side to another side)

    Examples:
    They are going to the bazar with friends for shopping.
    They are planning to attend a  grand wedding ceremony in the village.

 

  • Beyond
    (referring to the distance of a place) 

               Examples:
              The office is beyond the beautiful valley.
              This is really beyond the capacity of knowledge.

 

  • From
    (used to describe the starting point or the origin) 

               Examples:
               The man was compelled by his boss to borrow some money from someone.
                She finally decided to make an apology to her husband.

 

  • In front of
    (referring to the close of something) 

                Examples
               They were fighting in front of the Mosque.
              All the employees are protesting against the government in front of the Supreme Court.

 

  • During     
    (used to say when something takes place but unspecific timing) 

                Examples:
               Nobody dared to to speak during the presentation in front of the boss.

               We suddenly went to see our friend during the conference call.

 

  • Near      
    (describing the state of being close to something) 

               Examples:
              The police station is situated near my city which is very comfortable for us.
              He lives near the post office.

 

  • Outside
    (referring to an unspecified place) 

               Examples:
                All my friends have been waiting for me outside.
                The dog is constantly barking outside the village.

 

  • Of
    (used to express relationships between other words) 

              Examples:

    (used to refer to a higher position than anything else

    (used to tell the connection)

Examples:

    (describing the result of any action)

Examples:
He failed the final exams because of his idle friends.
She could not be able to arrange the money for her admission because of her disloyalty.

 

  • Among
    (describing the association or relation)

Examples:

You should divide these candies among poor people.

 

  • In addition
    (Adding information)

Examples

  • Towards
    (describing movement to a particle 
    direction

Examples:

    (used to give an introduction that something is not included)

Examples:
She finally decided to leave her permanent job except her bonus.
The judge declared to release the culprit from the punishment except for the fines.

 

  • Amidst
    (being in the middle side)

Examples:
She made up her mind to stand amidst all my familiar friends and relatives at the party.
Due to depression, he was unable to stand among her friends.

 

 

  • Underneath
    (something is hidden and covered by something else)

    Examples:
    I snatched the pistol and hid it underneath the bed.

  • Instead of
    (in place of)

Examples:

    (in the interest of)
