Linking Words and Their Use in English

As the name indicates, linking words link ideas in an essay, story, speech, communication, reading, or writing. These words let the readers know about the flow of your discussion. From the linking words, the readers or listeners can guess whether someone is trying to add any information or summarize it. One can easily differentiate if you are trying to contrast or if you like or unlike things. These words show whether you are going to continue your discussion or you’re ending it. Similarly, these are important to favor someone’s ideas or to dislike them.

Furthermore, if you are writing a story or novel, it’s very important to link the ideas. Otherwise, the readers may confuse and not understand what you want to say, and ultimately they’ll lose interest in your novel or story. The same goes for writing academic documents, emails, speaking on messages or even on call. So, it’s very important to use the linking words in sentences because these words help us to connect our ideas, sentence or phrases.

Linking words, also known as transition or connective words, are essential in writing as they help establish connections between different parts of a text. They serve various functions, such as indicating sequence, addition, contrast, comparison, cause and effect, and more. Here are some common categories of linking words:
